 Editorial Dear Readers,
Since the last editorial, there has been a bit more clarity about the organisation of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE) and I am happy to announce that the EESC has been given permanent observer status on its Executive Board. This body will oversee the work, process and organisation of the Conference. I am now looking forward to co-operating with the Liaison Group and its member civil society organisations on our contribution to the CoFoE, in order to ensure that the voice of organised civil society is clearly heard at the Conference. Preparations for the Conference on the Future of Europe have made up a large part of my work as EESC President recently. This Conference is a unique opportunity for organised civil society and citizens to have their say on the future of our Union and to take back ownership of the European project. We should not miss this opportunity! Recent Eurobarometer data have shown that the vast majority of people (92%) across all Member States are calling for the citizens' views to be 'taken more into account in decisions relating to the future of Europe'. That being the case, I was happy to participate in the first three meetings of the Executive Board and am looking forward to participating, on behalf of the EESC, in the official launch of the Conference, which will take place on Europe Day, 9 May. The multilingual digital platform that will collect the public's contributions and the outcome of events was already launched on the 19 April. I highlighted during one of the Executive Board meetings that this platform was most welcome, but that it could only be seen as complementing face-to-face contact and that the representativeness of contributions needed to be considered thoroughly. The EESC also has a dedicated webpage that will be regularly updated with relevant information, and I invite you to take a look at it. I am aware that everybody's expectations are high, especially at a time when the economic, social and human consequences of the COVID-19 crisis are right in front of our eyes.
Ensuring that the CoFoE is a true opportunity for civil society organisations and citizens to express their expectations of the EU is one of the main challenges for the Conference on the Future of Europe, a challenge that we, at the EESC, take very seriously. I believe it is of the outmost importance to establish constructive and impactful cooperation between the EESC and the civil society organisations represented in the Liaison Group in the context of our work on the CoFoE. The EESC recently endorsed a roadmap that provides for the Liaison Group and its CSOs as a relevant partner (see planned activities document on the above-mentioned webpage). Moreover, the EESC adopted a resolution outlining a New Narrative for Europe - Europe: a great place to be and prosper at its April plenary session. Among the first steps in our cooperation, I can already mention the invitation to Brikena Xhomaqi, Co-Chair of the Liaison Group, to speak on behalf of the CSOs at the EESC Bureau meeting on 18 May.
I am sure that by working together our contribution to the current discussions on the future of Europe will be stronger and better recognised by the EU institutions. United for the future of Europe!

EDRi: New developments in the Reclaim Your Face campaign As part of the Reclaim Your Face campaign, EDRi has published an overview of biometric mass surveillance experiments and deployments across EU countries. Existing evidence shows practices are spread throughout Germany, Austria, Czechia, Italy, Greece, France, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Slovenia and Poland. Moreover, following EU president Ursula von der Leyen's acknowledgment of the need to "go further" regarding AI technologies that pose a risk to fundamental rights, the group sent a letter to the EU Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders. In this letter, 51 digital rights, human rights and social justice organisations called on the Justice Commissioner to ban biometric mass surveillance in the EU's upcoming AI legislation. You can find out more by reading this overview of the evidence and the letter to the EU Justice Commissioner.

AGE: Older people keep a watchful eye on COVID-19 vaccination strategies As vaccination slowly progresses around Europe, older people's organisations are swinging into action to provide up-to-date information about vaccination policies and make decision-makers aware of the pitfalls of some strategies: priority groups need to be clearly identified and helped to access vaccination, alternatives to digital booking must be available, vaccination premises must be available and accessible by transport, and public authorities should be alert to the risk of scams. Social Platform: A missed opportunity? Social Platform's initial reaction to the European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan Social Platform welcomes the fact that the Action Plan contains many positive initiatives in a variety of policy fields, but we feel that it does not achieve its potential to be the comprehensive implementation plan for an effective European Pillar of Social Rights that we advocated and hoped for. We strongly regret that the Action Plan does not give equal importance and weight to all the 20 principles of the Social Pillar and does not provide specific and ambitious actions for each of its 20 principles. Additionally, the Action Plan overall does not sufficiently focus on measures targeting groups in vulnerable situations. Read more here.

Hearing on Pay transparency - the next step to end the gender pay gap, 5 May The Commission proposed in March 2021 new pay transparency measures, such as pay information for job seekers, a right to know the pay levels for workers doing the same work, as well as gender pay gap reporting obligations for big companies. Europe Day 2021, 9 May 2021 Europe Day on 9 May commemorates the date of the Schuman Declaration, which was the starting point for today’s European Union.
